The pillow hit him on the side of the face and he laughed. “Hey!” he protested with a smile. America quickly sobered up though, and shook his head. “Nah, I know I will. It’s in my nature.” That answer probably wouldn’t make much sense to Selina, but it was the best he could do.
“Enjoy your delusion while it lasts,” she said quietly, “There will be a day when there’s no one left but yourself, and you’re the only one who can defend yourself,”
Experience spoke from behind her quiet words.
“I intend to live my delusion to the fullest,” he said, eyes burning with conviction. Still, that was another matter for another time. Tilting his head, he rose an eye brow at her. “What’s with the pessimism?”
She leans back in her chair, “It’s part of the territory. In Gotham or Blüdhaven, there is no one you can reply on but yourself and a few choice allies. Those allies are prone to being taken out at any time. You have to stay on the edge and you have to be fast. There, it’s still survival of the fittest,”
He frowned and crossed his arms. “That doesn’t sound like a great way to live. You don’t always have to be so alone.” America sighed. “I mean, you’ve got Reb. I know she’s not going to let you down or anything — she’s pretty tough!” In an attempt to make her smile, he punched her on the shoulder. “And you’ve got me! I promise you can rely on me, dude.”
The girl tilts her head slightly, “Everyone has a weakness, and everyone falls at one time or another. In the end, everyone is alone,” she rubs her shoulder as he hits it, acting as if it had hurt, then adds, “A Green Lantern is susceptible to certain things, and you, as a human, are so much more vulnerable than anyone would like to admit,”
America leaned back, a wide grin on his face. He guessed he could play along for a little while before he told her his secret. “I haven’t fallen yet, and I’ve done some crazy shit in my life. So who’re you to say those things?” He flicked her forehead. “You don’t know my life, kid, so stop being all down in the dumps! Just let me believe in my delusion for a little longer, yeah?”
Selina stuck her tongue out at him with a slight smile, “I’m just being realistic, Al,”
